SENDAI (Nikkei)–The Toyota Motor Corp. (7203) group, PanaHome Corp. (1924) and Shimizu Corp.(1803) will supply 1,600 smart homes to a new town to be built here for those who lost their homes to the disaster last March.
The homes will be built as part of a 25 billion yen project led by Hitachi Ltd. (6501) and the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (9432) group to build a town featuring solar power systems and smart grids on a roughly 34-hectare plot in the Wakabayashi district of Sendai.
Because elderly people will likely make up a large portion of its residents, the new town will concentrate hospital and elderly care facilities at its center. The NTT group plans to build a telecommunications network to allow residents to access medical services remotely from home. Sports, hot bath and other health-related facilities are also expected to be set up.
The town will host a terminal station of the Sendai city subway that is slated to open in fiscal 2015.
