Japan Misses Temporary Housing Target by over 5,000 Units, jiji press 8/15/11

Tokyo, Aug. 15 (Jiji Press)–The amount of temporary housing constructed for people in areas devastated by the March 11 disaster totaled 47,303 units as of Monday, falling 5,055 units short of the central government’s target, the land ministry said.
Although Prime Minister Naoto Kan pledged that his government would finish building temporary housing for all people in need of such homes in northeastern areas devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami by mid-August, the government failed to meet the deadline.
Temporary housing construction had not been completed by Monday in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.
Out of the 22,060 units needed in Miyagi, 2,292 had not been completed, due to difficulties in finding and developing construction sites.
In Fukushima, 2,763 units had not been finished out of 16,000 units needed, due to delays in contracts for private land.
