5/3/11 journal, ishinomaki

after an overnight bus from kyoto to tokyo, an early morning making a bleary eyed way to the orientation (lots of coffee stops), an orientation at the nippon foundation, a 6 hour bus ride north, another orientation, we are in sleeping bags in a judo gym. and we are leaving at 5:30 in the morning, so it’s a good thing I slept on the bus and can tomorrow too–it’s 1.5 hours to the beach where we will be working.

I have a lot of energy now though, don’t feel especially tired. the organizers (nikkei youth network and the nippon foundation) are really organized, it’s quite impressive, and everything is completely bilingual.

the TBS tv crew has interviewed me several times already–it seems they nabbed me based on my response to survey about why I am here.

I’m excited to hear we will be going around with local fishermen tomorrow. the buses will take us to the general area, and then we will ride in the local folks’ trucks to our actual work sites. happy to hear we will working together with them, or I should say, according to what they want us to do.

I’m also happy to hear that we will be oriented for evacuation on the job site –aftershocks are likely.
