Towns struggle to track evacuees / Local govts don’t know where 40% of residents around N-plant went, 4/22/2011 yomiuri shinbun

The eight municipalities in Fukushima Prefecture that have been forced to move their offices due to the nuclear crisis do not know where nearly 40 percent of their residents are located, a Yomiuri Shimbun survey has found. People living in areas within 30 kilometers of the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant have been told by the central government to evacuate or stay indoors. Many of the residents who are unaccounted for are believed to have gone to stay with friends or relatives outside the prefecture. The municipalities have urged evacuees to contact them, as failure to do so would make it difficult to distribute relief money and public services. (Yomiuri)
